  4.     DIED. Ioan Totu, 60, former Romanian Foreign Minister and
  5. close aide to the late dictator Nicolae Ceausescu; by hanging
  6. himself at his home; in Bucharest. Totu and 20 other former
  7. high-ranking communist officials were tried in 1990 for
  8. attempting to crush the 1989 revolution that brought down the
  9. Ceausescu regime. Though they were acquitted and released, an
  10. appeal by Romania's chief prosecutor led to their conviction
  11. last week. Totu faced a 16-year prison sentence for aggravated
  12. murder.
